Functional cosmetics screening status in the first half of 2023 by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety

 

In the first half of this year, a total of 524 cases were reviewed for functional cosmetics, an increase of 39 compared to the same period last year. Among them, sunscreen functional cosmetics were the most with 192 cases.

Sunscreen with the highest number of screening cases in the first half

According to data released by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the number of functional cosmetics review cases in the first half of this year was 524, an increase of 39 cases (8%) from 485 cases in the same period last year.

 

Looking at the number of screening cases by functionality, △ UV protection 192 cases △ Triple functionality (whitening, wrinkle improvement, UV protection) 92 cases △ Hair loss symptom relief 72 cases △ Double functionality (whitening · wrinkle improvement) 36 cases in the order.

 

The number of review cases for single, double and triple functional cosmetics was 366, 66 and 92, respectively. △ Single functional cosmetics increased by 67 cases △ Triple functional cosmetics increased by 11 cases, but the number of screening cases for dual functional cosmetics decreased by 39 cases.

 

Also, among the functional cosmetics reviewed in the first half of last year, a total of 7 new main ingredients were △wrinkle improvement 2 items △hair loss relief 5 items.

 

In the case of the new active ingredient, starting with 1 case in the first half of 2021, △ 4 cases in the second half of 2021 △ 9 cases in the first half of 2022, 7 cases in the second half of 2022 △ 7 cases in the first half of this year, the number of cases gradually increased.

Increased development of functional cosmetics for recovery of skin barrier function

The number of screening cases for 'cosmetics that help improve itching by restoring the function of the skin barrier', which was first designated as a functional cosmetic in 2020, was only 3 in 2021 and 9 last year.

 

However, in the case of this year, it was counted that 11 cases were reviewed in the first half alone, and the fact that R&D and production in this sector were active was also a major feature of the functional cosmetics review in the first half of the year.

 

Functional cosmetics screening, domestic manufacturing accounted for 89%

Among the functional cosmetics review items in the first half, 466 cases were domestically manufactured and 58 were imported, accounting for 88.9% of domestic manufacturing. Following last year △ 83.5% in the first half (405 cases of manufacturing, 80 cases of import) △ 86.3% in the second half (422 cases of manufacturing, 67 cases of import), the proportion of domestic manufactured items seems to be increasing.
